relink textures

I have a model with associated textures and each time I go back to it I have problems with textures appearing black.  In the project asset inspector I relink and get green ticks but no textures in the scene. The paths in the project asset inspector are correct.  I close it and no textures.  When I reopen the are no longer linked. 

Thoughts?
